NO STRINGS, Charlie reminded himself as he hung up the phone. He had to keep it that way, regardless of how much she appealed to him. His life was complicated enough, without taking on a whole new family. And he still needed to find a way to discourage her from selling that house herself.

His attraction to her was a strange phenomenon, because Bella was a prickly, intense and complicated woman. He’d always assumed that easygoing, free-flowing, slightly independent women would be more his type—Alice’s exact opposite.

Bella was way beyond slightly independent. He practically had to arm wrestle her to get her to let him help with anything. Funny how eager he was to help Bella, and how reluctant when it came to Alice.

His ex-wife was off the charts when it came to needy. Charlie felt sorry for her, but he was getting increasingly tired of the emotional blackmail she was so good at doling out. Trouble was, he’d established a pattern there, and patterns were tough to break.

Bella, on the other hand, intrigued him, even with her fierce independence, bad temper and all. He found her sexy as hell. He very much wanted to take her to bed, although a viable method had so far eluded him. Her house came with teenagers, and his…Well, his place wasn’t such a good idea, either.

Emma had an unnerving habit of turning up at his door unexpectedly. He’d have to do something about that, too, but like Alice and her demands, he hadn’t decided exactly how to go about it yet.

Yawning, he set aside his book, turned off the lights and made his way to the bedroom. The rented apartment was small, in one of the older buildings on Main Street. On the positive side, it was cheap and had come furnished. On the debit side, it was noisy and dingy.

Not exactly a romantic hideaway. But if worst came to worst—or best came to best—he’d bring Bella here. At least the bed didn’t squeak.

He began imagining trying to make it squeak, and was almost asleep when the phone rang again.

“Daddy?” Emma’s panicky voice brought him upright, feet on the floor, heart hammering with dread. She hadn’t called him Daddy since her early teens.

“Daddy, I’m at the General. Mom’s taken pills. Please, can you come?”
